Damage at Canatara Park
By City Staff
In the early morning on Saturday, April 8, 2017, one or more vehicles entered Canatara Park and proceeded to cause extensive damage to green space areas normally off limits to vehicles.
Damage includes extensive turf destruction on the open field area and hills around the park. Preliminary estimates of damage are approximately $5000 to remediate the area.
Parks and Recreation administration continue to meet with Sarnia Police Services to evaluate crime prevention strategies for all community places and spaces. On Wednesday, City staff plan to meet with Sarnia Police Services at Canatara Park to focus on measures to prevent this activity from occurring in the future.
Due to the current wet conditions in the area, the damage will not be repaired until the ground becomes more firm. Easter in the Park planned for Saturday in Canatara Park will continue as scheduled.
Parks and Recreation staff hope the area will be dry enough by Community Parks Clean-Up Day, April 22, 2017, to complete repairs during this volunteer-led event; Staff are appealing to local landscaping contractors for any volunteer assistance that can be donated.
Residents are asked to call Crime Stoppers or Sarnia Police Services with any information about this willful destruction of property, and are reminded to remain vigilant in the protection of all our valued community spaces.
