Fence By-law Review
Council has directed staff to review the City's Fence By-law to better address matters of public safety and neighbourhood aesthetics. The following areas of the By-law are currently being reviewed:
Fencing Adjacent To Driveways
The current by-law restricts fence heights to 0.75 metres (2.5 feet) in areas where a driveway abuts a municipal sidewalk. In residential areas without sidewalks, fences can be as tall as 2.5 metres (8.2 feet.).
Proposed changes would llimit fence heights to 0.75 metres (2.5 feet) in areas where a residential driveway abuts the boulevard, regardless if there is a sidewalk present or not.
Front Yard Fencing in Residential Areas
The current by-law permits fences as tall as 2.5 metres (8.2 feet) in the front yard of any residential lot.
Proposed changes would limit fence heights to 1 metre (3.3 feet) if located in front of the house.
Fencing Adjacent to Walkways
The current by-law permits fences as tall as 2.5 metres (8.2 feet) in areas where a walkway abuts a street.
No changes are proposed as residential front yard fencing restrictions would address this issue.
Please let us know what you think of the proposed changes. You can send us your thoughts by emailing them to firstname.lastname@example.org by November 18th.
The changes will be brought forward for Council's consideration on December 7, 2015. Download the documents below for further information.
