What is a Civil Marriage?

A civil ceremony has a government or civil official performing the ceremony.  A civil marriage is a wedding that takes place without any religious affiliation and meets the legal requirements under the Marriage Act for the Province of Ontario.

Marriage ceremonies need to be pre-booked.  A mandatory pre-ceremony consultation meeting will take place prior to the ceremony (approximately up to 1 hour). This meeting can be done the same day the marriage licence is obtained. Applicants must pre-book this appointment with the City Clerk, Deputy Clerk, or Customer Service Manager.

Civil Marriage Ceremonies are performed by appointment only.  We will try our best to accommodate last minute requests but we recommend booking your civil ceremony at least two weeks in advance.

What do we have to do in advance of the ceremony?

Both partners must attend a meeting with the Municipal Clerk / Designate approximately one week prior to the ceremony to finalize details.  A valid marriage licence and ceremony payment is required at the time of the meeting.
